Project 1- Notan Apple Design in 3 Values

Today we will begin our first Project 1. We are going to take the charcoal drawing of 5 apples that we completed earlier. We will transfer this drawing to our 18 x 24 pad and then create a 3 value Notan reflecting on what we have learned from the Dow, Notan Apple Design assignment. This will build on the Dow assignment and reinforce strategies to create strong compositions through mass rather than line. The charcoal drawing contains variety in mass and line quality that we can easily transfer to a strong Notan Design.

Project 1- Notan Apple Design in 3 Values

Materials:
  • Drawing of 5 Apples in the 18 x 24 pad, this is already completed.
  • 18 x 24 pad
  • 2B pencil
  • Gum eraser
  • Tracing paper or light board or window to transfer the design to the 18 x 24 pad. You may be able to directly transfer through the sheets of the pad by placing the charcoal drawing behind the clean sheet where the pencil tracing will go.
  • Microns
  • Black marker, wide, sharpie (use what you have)
  • Spray fixative- this is optional. You can spray your charcoal drawing before you transfer it to preserve it.
Assignment:
  • Transfer the charcoal drawing to another 18 x 24 sheet of paper from your pad.
  • You should have a very light pencil drawing of your apple design.
  • Consider the dimension of the border. Will this be a narrow, horizontal composition? Will it include more background above the apples? Will it include more of the foreground table plane and less of the upper background? Will any of the apples be partially cropped out?
  • Indicate the areas that you wish to be the third value- don’t outline these in black marker. We want the edges open ended so that the white space of the light side has access to the white spaces within the 3rd value.
  • Marker in a Notan Design in 3 values. There will be a pure black and the white of the paper and a third value.
  • The third value should be created by using parallel diagonal lines within a specific area. Design this well, reflecting on what you learned in the Dow, Notan Apple Design in 3 values. Apply the same techniques here.
  • Don’t forget to consider the background- will there be a shape of value in this area?
  • Border- the Notan must have a black or white border as part of the design.

The tracing paper is laid over the drawing. I outlined the seperate value areas. Is this area a white, a black or the third value? I indicated each area as a Dark, white or #3. Later, after I transfer it, I will keep the tracing to let me know what value to place in each area.
This is a close-up of how I traced each area and indicated which value it is, dark, white or #3.
Here, I have pulled back the tracing paper to the left. To the right, is the transfer of my drawing- it is lighter than the tracing paper. Look at how I have indicated each area by a light outline. I will then, use the tracing paper, where I have indicated my value scheme, to tell me what value to make each area. Save the tracing paper to compare the arrangement of the values.
