Project 2- Notan Shaving Cream Ad

The Object is to create a Notan that could be used for an ad campaign for a shaving cream company like Barbisol. This is the Brand I would like you to use as the can is simple to render and the stripes are highly recognizable and form a contrast between black and white. We will also watercolor the stripes in red or green, very simply to add a touch of interest through a color accent. The goal is to compose a strong design that catches one’s attention.

Notan Shaving Cream Ad

Materials:
  • Barbisol shaving cream (you may need 2 cans as we will squirt the foam out to render the designs of the cream)
  • 11 x 14 Multi-media pad
  • Pencils- 2H, HB
  • Gum eraser
  • Microns
  • Black marker, wide, Sharpie (or what is available)
  • Watercolor set
  • Water in a container
  • Paper towels
  • Brush from set
Assignment:
  • On your table, set-up your can of Barbisol. You can rotate the can in any direction. Look for an interesting design in the stripes; look where the top spout of the can appears. This detail will help add interest.
  • Note the shadow pattern on the can and the cast shadow. How will the cast shadow fit into the composition? Look at the can and observe how the form shadow and small cast shadows run near the division between the darks and lights. This variety is critical to creating interest.
  • Looking at the cast shadow of the can and the can- figure out where the cream will fit, include its cast shadow. Make sure that both objects have the light coming from the exact same direction.
  • Once you have a sense of the composition, place the study of the cream within the composition.
  • Now look at all the elements to make sure they make sense.
  • Create a Notan
  • Consider what will happen in the background in order to highlight the elements.
  • Include a border of Black or white- this border may merge into parts of the composition- they may also, break away from the interior objects.

I have created my composition, observing the sizes of the can and cream, the shape of the cast shadows, and how much space I want around these objects. I then, trace them; flip over my tracing paper and go over the lines; I then flip the tracing back to its original orientation and place it on my 11 x 14 pad be careful to judge the amount of space I want around the objects and where my border will be.
I transferred my basic outline, then I sketched in some other details that I want to consider such as the label. I also mapped out my background shape- that will be black and my border shape. The border can be implied or a direct outlined border. In this version I used both ways to describe my border.
Remember to apply the marker in parallel diagonal lines to form a unity of tone. I left some white showing here in order to mimic a woodcut print. The blacks could also be solid but still apply the marker in the same fashion. I used the Micron .05 to do the label.
