Class Twenty Seven

Project 5, The Idealized Head, Part III

In this lesson, I will cover some of the last details we need to attend to in order to complete this project. We will look at the value, pencil technique and the unity of the drawings. We will also look at the over-all appearance of the larger format.

Assignment

Finish working on this project. Things to remember:

Gibson Head:

  • Pick out some dark shapes such as eyebrows; pupil/lashes Keep these unified); Down plane of the upper lip; Parts of hair- Shadow side/ down planes; Hair near neck.
  • Increase softness of pencil by one degree 2H-HB or HB-B.
  • Continue the pencil lines in the same direction, parallel to the plane they are on. No cross-hatching.
  • No hard outlines!

Aphrodite Head:

  • Use Sargent’s drawing of Apollo as a guide
  • Simplicity of the shadow shapes
  • Unity in the direction of the strokes. Keep the parallel diagonal lines the same. Do not change direction
  • Some darks can be added to the down planes and the shadow edge
  • Simplicity and unity of the eyes to the sockets. Do not over draw these. They should be softer and more unified than the schematic drawing.
  • Remember to simplify the areas of the value mass, like Sargent.
  • No hard outlines!
