Class Four

Project 1, Part II Further Techniques

In this lesson I would like to demonstrate some further techniques using charcoal and the kneaded eraser. This will help create a more complete and finished drawing. The assignment for this lesson is to continue to work on Project 1.

Assignment

Materials:

Project 1 drawing of “Origami and Branch”.

You are to continue to further your Project 1 drawing by applying some of the techniques discussed in this lesson. Trim and vary your lines by shaping them with the kneaded eraser. Pull out lights with your kneaded eraser in areas that are very narrow, rather than erasing the line on either side of the form. Look at how you can vary the thickness vs. thinness of the line to add interest. Consider contrast- make lines darker vs. lighter. Look for edges that can be sharp vs. soft. Consider your point of focus. This should contain all the elements discussed.

Observe your branch. Look at the connecting segments of the branch, how are they attached to the main stem. What is the character of your branch, thin like shoots like a forsythia or gnarly knobs like a cherry branch? Add variety by trimming with the kneaded eraser. To give a feeling of the shadow side of the branch, make the line darker and thicker on the shadow side. This is a way to use line to indicate light on a form. Add cross- contour lines to those branches that are pointing at you or away from you. This will add a 3-D quality to the drawing.

Look at the origami balloons. How are the sizes and proportions different between the origami balloons? Be specific and do not generalize. Shape forms with kneaded eraser, trimming where necessary and pulling out any light areas. Add cross-contour lines to indicate the movement of the forms. Are these forms tilted toward you or away from you? Can you see more of the top or bottom? Which sides can you see and how much of each side? Next, add a darker, thicker line on the shadow side. Thin the line on the light side.

Finish. Clean up your drawing, erasing any unnecessary lines, so it appears clean and graphic. This is important as we will use Project 1 for our Notan Label Project.

In the final version, add variety in the line and carry dark accents through the entire composition so that you can guide where the viewer’s gaze travels.
