The Crane

The first lesson I like to give in Drawing I is a simple assignment, whereby I may assess the basic skills that you bring to the class. I begin with an origami crane. This object is made from a flat sheet of 7″ x 7″ piece of paper. It begins as a 2-D object that becomes 3-D through the folding process. But it still retains some 2-D qualities- the flatness of the planes that make up the crane. These flat planes when drawn in the correct arrangement and perspective, give us the 3-D feeling of the crane itself.

Building the crane

Assignment:

Please construct 1 origami crane from a 7″ x 7″ sheet of light weight paper. It can be white or colored. Do not use construction paper as this is very heavy and will be difficult to fold. Writing paper, copy paper or loose leaf paper is fine to use. Make sure the sheet of paper is square. To get a square, fold the sheet from point to point, then cut off extra. I have included instructions for the crane below. You may also, go on the internet and watch a video on how to fold an origami crane. https://youtu.be/Ux1ECrNDZl4

Upload a photo of your crane to the Assignment section so that I know you built it.

1 Origami Crane

11 x 14 sketchbook

Show me what you know. Do your best.
