Class Eleven

Project 3 – 3 Eggs in 5 Values, Part I

Assignment

Materials:

11×14 pad of white paper

pencil set- #2H, #HB, #B, #2B, #4B, #6B

Gum eraser(yellow)

Comparison stick (this could be anything straight- ruler, brush handle, long spoon handle etc.)

3 Hard Boiled eggs on your table (table should be a little darker than light side of eggs).

Project:

Place the 3 eggs on your table like this- place one close to where you are viewing it, another one slightly further back and not overlapping, the third egg even further back and this can be slightly behind another egg. The goal should be to have the eggs on different planes in the composition. Make sure your light is to one side and slightly above so the cast shadow will appear more on one side of the egg. Remember the spheres that we just worked on.

Place your sketchbook horizontally and begin to lay out your drawing using the #2H. This is your lightest pencil. Sketch the eggs in the composition, staying very light. Do your comparisons to make sure they are the right size and the right relation to each other. Make corrections and re-draw.

On another piece of paper, create a 5 value chart as we did in class. Do it freely first; divide into the different values; number the values; then underneath do the same thing but apply the pencil techniques as follows (this is exactly the same as the one we did in class that you were suppose to use for this project, except I collected them):

Value#0- white of the paper

Value #1-parallel diagonal lines, #HB

Value #2- parallel diagonal lines, #B

Value#3- Cross-contour or Cross-hatching, #2B

Value #4- Cross-hatching, #4B

Value #5- Unified tone (little “c” on top of cross-hatching), #6B

Identify the form shadow pattern (shadow on the egg) and the cast shadow shape (shadow on the table). Draw these shapes on your egg and table.

Next, Place value #4 on the form shadow using Cross-hatching as above. Place value #4 in the cast shadow area using the pencil technique parallel diagonal lines.

Next, render value #5 (unified tone). It will appear along the shadow edge and in the cast shadow. Look for any variance here.

Next, work your way from the shadow edge #5 with a little #4, then, #3,#2,#1 until you get to the highlight which is #0, white of the paper.

Email me a photo of your image if you would like help in the process. Think of this as me going around the room answering questions and helping you.

LastlyUpload your finished piece on Brightspace in the assignment section Project 3 – 5 Values. Take your photo by placing your drawing in a vertical position so that it is parallel to the camera. Take photo. Do not lay flat on a table and take the photo as this will create distortion and will make it difficult for me to analyze your drawing.

Here is a reminder of the pencil techniques and the 5 value chart
Here I have sketched the eggs, indicated the cast shadows, did my comparisons (vertical, Horizontal and proportional), re-drew, then I drew the shape of the form shadows on the eggs, laid in the value 4 in the form shadows and cast shadows, them added value 5, then began to work my way toward the lights adding value3,2,1,0. Lastly, I added a value 2-3 in the background to bring out the lights.
